Caught Looking for Luca 

“Caught Looking for Luca” was a fund created at the request of Michigan State University Baseball’s dominant lefty, Joseph Dzierwa. A high-level pitching prospect taking the next steps to the MLB, Joseph wanted his impact at MSU to stretch far beyond leading the team in inning’s pitched.

With support from Team Impact, which matches children facing serious illness and disability with college sports teams, that vision has come to life.

Luca Wright, a six year-old from Lapeer, MI who loves baseball, Spiderman, and Mario, is currently taking down B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia. After connecting with Michigan State Baseball, a wonderful friendship was formed, and the team was fully on board in supporting Luca every step of the way.

Dzierwa, the leader of this initiative, is making a donation to the fund for each strikeout he records this year. Coming off a season with 92 strikeouts, he envisions an even bigger number on the horizon!

“Luca is a true inspiration to me and to the entire Spartan team,” Joseph said. “Anything that we can do to put a smile on his face and be there for him during this journey—we are all in. He’s a great kid, and we are proud to be in his corner.”
